International Youth Day: Katsina Coalition Urges Youths to Embrace Peace for Prosperity

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, a coalition of youth organizations in collaboration with the Katsina State Ministry of Youth and Sports held an event to mark International Youth Day. The event took place at the conference hall of the Katsina State Local Government Commission and attracted a large gathering of youths from across the state's local government areas.
The organizations that spearheaded the event included the International Youth Mercy Corps Community, the Katsina State chapter of the National Youth Center, and the Katsina State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
This year's theme, "Peace as the Foundation for Prosperity and Community Development; Let’s Embrace Peace," was explored through various lectures delivered in both English and Hausa. These lectures highlighted the challenges facing today's youth and offered guidance on how they can build a successful future.
The event featured presentations from a diverse range of experts, including doctors, professors, government officials, security agencies, and representatives from various youth organizations.
Among the speakers were Dr. Bala Abdullahi Husain from Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina; Dr. Mukhtar Alkasim from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; and the Director of the Katsina State Youth and Sports Development Agency, Alhaji Sani Yahaya.
Other notable contributors included DSP Daniel Eneche, representing the State Commissioner of Police; A’isha Aliyu Marafa, President of the "We Girls" Youth Empowerment Group; and representatives from the State Civil Defence Corps.
The lectures focused on topics such as the identity of a youth, pathways to self-reliance, the essential factors for youth development like education, skills, and discipline, and the role of youth in economic advancement.
Additionally, the event provided a platform for discussions on everyday life challenges and the issues affecting the community. Recommendations were offered, along with a question-and-answer session, providing insights on how youths can benefit from the opportunities provided by the government, especially at the state level, to promote self-reliance.
The United Nations has designated August 12 as International Youth Day to address youth issues and explore solutions worldwide.
